Big Moissanite Engagement Rings: What to Know Before You Choose 3 to 10 Carats

Moissanite is the reason big engagement rings are no longer only for celebrities. A 5 carat moissanite solitaire costs less than many 1 carat diamond rings, and a 10 carat look is within reach of an ordinary budget. A big stone is a different object on the hand, though: it sits higher, it catches more light and more knocks, and the setting has more work to do. Here is what to know before you choose one.

Why Moissanite Makes Big Stones Affordable

With a mined diamond, the price per carat climbs steeply with size because large stones are rare. Moissanite is grown, so a bigger stone costs only a little more. In our store each extra carat on a simple solitaire adds $50, whatever the metal:

Centre stone 925 sterling silver 14K solid gold 18K solid gold
3 ct $249.99 $749.98 $849.98
5 ct $349.99 $849.98 $949.98
7 ct $449.99 $949.98 $1,049.98
10 ct $599.99 $1,099.98 $1,199.98

Prices of our simple round solitaires, checked in October 2026. Halo, pavé and other detailed designs cost more in gold, and most of our ring designs can be ordered from 1 to 10 carats.

How Big Is Big? Sizes on the Hand

Moissanite is labelled by diamond-equivalent size, so these are the sizes of a round stone of each weight, and how much of the width of a US size 6 finger (about 16.5 mm across) it covers:

  • 3 ct: about 9.3 mm, just over half the finger.
  • 5 ct: about 11.1 mm, two thirds of the finger.
  • 7 ct: about 12.4 mm, three quarters.
  • 10 ct: about 14 mm, most of the finger's width.

Elongated shapes give a big look at a more wearable width. A 5 carat oval is long on the finger but narrower than a 5 carat round, so it leaves room beside it for a wedding band and the next finger. Every shape is in our size chart, and our carat size guide covers 1 to 10 carats in detail.

Choosing the Shape for a Large Stone

  • Oval, pear and marquise look the largest for their weight and flatter the finger; they are the easiest big stones to wear.
  • Emerald and Asscher step cuts show long, calm flashes of light rather than sparkle, and their clean facets make clarity easy to see, so a high clarity stone matters more. Ours are VVS1.
  • Round gives the most fire, which at 5 carats and above becomes a strong rainbow sparkle. Some people love that; if you want a calmer look, a step cut or an antique cut such as old European or Portuguese softens it.
  • Cushion, princess and radiant carry more weight below the surface, so they look a little smaller from the top; choose a slightly higher carat weight if you want the same face-up size as a round.

Choosing the Setting

  • More prongs, or a bezel. Above about 3 carats, six prongs or double claws hold the stone more securely than four, and a bezel protects the whole edge.
  • A sturdier band. A large stone acts like a lever on the band. A band of about 2 mm or more carries a 5 carat stone comfortably; very thin bands suit smaller stones better.
  • Height. Big stones sit higher, so they catch more often on gloves and knitwear. A lower basket or a bezel keeps the profile down; a cathedral setting lifts the stone for drama.
  • Balance. A halo makes a big stone look bigger again, which some people want and others find too much. A solitaire or a hidden halo keeps a large stone elegant.

Which Metal?

For a large stone worn every day, solid gold is the practical choice: 14K is strong and holds prongs well, 18K has the richest color, and 10K is the hardest and lightest on the budget. Sterling silver keeps the price very low and suits a fashion ring or occasional wear, but it is softer, so prongs on a big stone need checking more often. Yellow and rose on sterling silver are plated finishes.

Will a Big Moissanite Look Like a Diamond?

From a normal distance, a colorless moissanite looks very like a diamond. The difference you can see is fire: moissanite throws more colorful flashes than a diamond, and the bigger the stone, the more noticeable the rainbow becomes. That is part of its appeal for many people. Moissanite is its own gemstone, silicon carbide, not a diamond, and it rates 9.25 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for everyday wear. Living with a Big Ring

  • Take it off for the gym, gardening and heavy lifting; a large stone is the first thing to hit a weight bar.
  • Turn it palm-side in when carrying bags or reaching into pockets.
  • Clean it weekly; a film of lotion shows more on a big stone. See how to clean moissanite.
  • Have the prongs checked once or twice a year.
  • Plan the wedding band early. A big stone may need a curved or notched band to sit flush; our bridal sets are made to match.

Quick Answers

Is a 5 carat moissanite too big?

Not if you like a bold ring. At about 11.1 mm across it covers two thirds of a size 6 finger. An oval or pear of the same weight is narrower and easier to wear every day.

How much is a 10 carat moissanite ring?

In our store a simple 10 carat round solitaire is $599.99 in sterling silver and $1,099.98 in 14K solid gold.

Do big moissanite stones look fake?

No, but they do show more rainbow fire than a diamond, and that is easier to notice in a large stone. A step cut such as emerald or Asscher gives a calmer, more diamond-like look.

What setting is best for a big moissanite?

Six prongs, double claws or a bezel on a band of about 2 mm or wider, in solid gold.

Can I wear a big moissanite ring every day?

Yes. Moissanite is hard enough for daily wear; the care points are the setting and the height, so take it off for sport and heavy work and have the prongs checked regularly.
