Portuguese Cut Moissanite Rings

A Portuguese cut is a round stone with far more facets than a round brilliant, arranged in extra rows on the crown and pavilion. The result is a dense, kaleidoscope-like sparkle. We offer it in colorless, blue and blue-green moissanite, made to order in silver or solid gold.

Why So Many Facets

A Portuguese cut adds extra rows of facets above and below the girdle. Each one reflects a small piece of light, so the stone shows a crowd of tiny flashes instead of a few large ones. Moissanite splits light into color strongly, so many of those flashes show as small sparks of rainbow. The pattern shows best on larger stones, which is why most rings here carry 3 ct or more.

How It Compares with Other Round Cuts

  • Round brilliant: crisp, balanced sparkle; the everyday classic.
  • Old European cut: fewer, broader, slower flashes with an antique feel.
  • Portuguese cut: many small, busy flashes across the whole face of the stone.

Colorless or Colored

Colorless Portuguese cuts look bright and icy. Blue and blue-green stones make the facet pattern easier to see, and the color shifts as the ring moves. For more colors and shapes, see our colored moissanite engagement rings.

Settings in This Collection

Choose from solitaires on plain or shared-prong pavé bands, a vintage halo and cluster-band designs. A Portuguese cut is a fairly deep stone, so it sits a little higher on the finger; check the side-view photos on each listing. Every ring is made to order in 925 sterling silver or 10K, 14K or 18K solid gold, in yellow, white or rose.

Common Questions

What is a Portuguese cut?

It is a round cut with extra rows of facets on both the top and bottom of the stone, giving many more facets than a standard round brilliant.

Does a Portuguese cut sparkle more than a round brilliant?

It sparkles differently. You see many more, smaller flashes spread across the stone. Some people find it livelier; others prefer the cleaner look of a round brilliant.

Why are most Portuguese cut rings large?

The extra facets are easiest to see on bigger stones. On a small stone the pattern blurs together, so this cut is usually chosen at 3 ct and above.

Does it come in colors?

Yes. This collection includes colorless, blue and blue-green Portuguese cut moissanite.

Can I buy the stone loose?

Yes. Our loose moissanite collection includes Portuguese cuts measured in millimetres for custom work.

How long does it take?

Each ring is made to order in 8 to 10 business days, then free standard shipping takes 8 to 20 business days, or express 6 to 9 business days.
