How Many Carats Should an Engagement Ring Be? Average Size, mm Chart and Prices

There is no correct carat weight for an engagement ring, but there is a typical one. US couples who married in 2025 chose a centre stone of about 1.9 carats on average, according to The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study. Most people land between 1 and 2 carats; larger stones have become far more common as lab grown diamonds and moissanite brought the price of size down. This guide shows what each carat weight actually looks like, how much of the finger it covers, and what it costs.

Carat Is Weight, Not Size

One carat is 0.2 grams. What you see on the hand is the stone's face-up size in millimetres, and that depends on the shape and how the stone is cut as well as its weight. That is why our ring listings give the centre stone's size in millimetres for each carat option, and why, for standard shapes, the ring page draws the chosen stone to scale on a finger before you buy.

Round Stone Sizes from 1 to 10 Carats

Typical diameters of a round brilliant, and roughly how much of the width of a US size 6 finger (about 16.5 mm across) the stone covers:

Carat weight Diameter Share of a size 6 finger
1 ct 6.5 mm about 40%
2 ct 8.1 mm about half
3 ct 9.3 mm about 56%
4 ct 10.1 mm about 61%
5 ct 11.1 mm about two thirds
6 ct 11.8 mm about 72%
7 ct 12.4 mm about three quarters
8 ct 13 mm about 79%
9 ct 13.5 mm about 82%
10 ct 14 mm about 85%

Notice how the diameter grows more slowly than the weight: doubling from 1 to 2 carats adds only 1.6 mm, because the extra weight spreads in every direction, including depth. On a smaller finger every stone covers more of the width and looks bigger; on a larger finger the same stone looks more modest.

Shape Changes How Big a Carat Looks

Long, shallow shapes spread their weight along the finger. At 1 carat a marquise measures about 10 x 5 mm, a pear about 8 x 5 mm and an oval about 7.7 x 5.7 mm, while a princess or Asscher is about 5.5 mm square because those cuts hold more weight below the surface. If you want the biggest look for the weight, choose an oval, pear or marquise; if you love a square stone, plan on a slightly higher carat weight to match the face-up size of a round. Every shape is in our size chart, and oval vs round compares the two most popular shapes.

The Setting Changes It Too

  • A halo adds about 1.5 to 2 mm of sparkle all round, so a 1 carat centre with a halo reads closer to a 1.5 to 2 carat stone.
  • A thin band makes the centre look larger by contrast; a wide band makes it look smaller.
  • A hidden halo adds sparkle from the side, not size from the top. See what is a hidden halo?

Lifestyle: How Big Is Too Big?

A larger stone sits higher and wider, so it is easier to knock and more likely to catch on gloves and knitwear. Up to about 3 carats most settings wear easily every day. Above that, look for six prongs or a bezel for security, a slightly wider band to carry the weight, and a lower setting if you work with your hands. Our guide to big moissanite engagement rings covers 3 to 10 carat stones in detail.

What Each Size Costs

Prices of our simple solitaires in 14K solid gold, checked in October 2026:

Centre stone Moissanite Lab grown diamond
1 ct $649.98 $1,299
2 ct $699.98 $1,599
3 ct $749.98 $1,899
5 ct $849.98 $2,499
10 ct $1,099.98 $3,999

With moissanite each extra carat adds $50; with a lab grown diamond it adds $300. A mined diamond climbs far more steeply, because large mined stones are rare. Moissanite is labelled by its diamond-equivalent size, so a 2 ct moissanite is the size of a 2 ct diamond; compare stones by millimetres and you will always compare like with like. Full price breakdowns are in our moissanite ring price guide and lab grown diamond price guide.

How to Choose Your Number

  1. Start from the hand. Look at the size table above against the finger, or use the to-scale preview on our ring pages.
  2. Pick the shape, then the carat weight that gives the millimetre size you want in that shape.
  3. Think about daily life. If the ring will be worn through work, sport and travel, a 1.5 to 3 carat stone in a secure setting is the comfortable range.
  4. Set the budget and decide what matters most: a bigger stone, a better metal, or a more detailed setting. With moissanite the stone size costs little, so the metal and design take most of the budget.

Quick Answers

What is the average engagement ring carat size?

About 1.9 carats for couples who married in 2025, according to The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study.

Is 1 carat big enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. A 1 carat round is about 6.5 mm across and covers roughly 40% of the width of a size 6 finger, a clear and classic size. An oval or pear of the same weight looks larger.

Is a 2 carat engagement ring too big?

Not for most people. At about 8.1 mm across, a 2 carat round covers about half the width of a size 6 finger and is now close to the average size.

How many millimetres is a 1 carat diamond?

About 6.5 mm for a round. Other shapes differ: about 7.7 x 5.7 mm for an oval and about 5.5 mm for a princess.

Does a moissanite carat look the same as a diamond carat?

Yes, when it is labelled by diamond-equivalent size, as ours are. Moissanite is about 10% lighter than diamond, so a stone the size of a 1 carat diamond weighs a little less; the millimetre size is what matters.
