How To Buy The Best Moissanite Wedding Bands?

How to Choose a Moissanite Wedding Band: Style, Width, Metal and Fit

A wedding band is the ring you will wear every day for the rest of your life, often right next to your engagement ring. Choosing one comes down to five things: the style, how it sits with your engagement ring, the width, the metal and the fit. Here is how to get each one right with a moissanite band.

1. Choose the Style

Style What it is Good to know
Plain or comfort fit A polished metal band, often with a rounded inside Simple, durable and easy to resize
Half eternity Stones across the top half of the band Sparkles where it shows, comfortable underneath, and usually resizable
Full eternity Stones all the way around Sparkles from every angle, but is very hard to resize, so the size must be right
Stackable Slim bands worn in twos or threes Lets you build a look over time
Curved or contour A band shaped to hug the engagement ring Closes the gap under halos, pear points and low settings
Statement Larger stones, such as five stone or emerald cut bands Can be worn alone as well as in a set

2. Make It Work with Your Engagement Ring

  • Check whether it sits flush. A straight band sits neatly beside a solitaire on a raised setting. A halo, a low bezel or a large pear or marquise often leaves a gap, which a curved or contour band closes.
  • Balance the two. A busy engagement ring with a halo or pavé band pairs well with a simple band. A plain solitaire can take a sparkling eternity band.
  • Match the width. A band about the same width as the engagement ring's shank usually looks most balanced.
  • Consider a matched set. A bridal set is designed so the two rings fit together.
  • Modern settings need planning. East-west and toi et moi rings sit differently on the finger; see east-west rings and toi et moi rings.

3. Pick the Width

Women's stone-set bands are usually 1.5 to 3.5 mm wide. Ours come in widths including 1.5, 1.8, 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 mm.

  • 1.5 to 2 mm: delicate, ideal for stacking and for slim engagement rings.
  • 2.5 to 3 mm: the most popular middle ground.
  • 3.5 mm and up: bolder, and works well on its own.

Wider bands feel snugger on the finger, so for a very wide band some people need a quarter to half size larger.

4. Match the Metal

Choose the same metal and karat as your engagement ring, so the colors match exactly and the two rings wear evenly as they rub together. If you love mixed metals, two-tone stacks are popular too. 14K gold is the usual choice for daily wear; see metal colors and white gold vs platinum.

5. Get the Fit and Size Right

  • Your band is usually the same size as your engagement ring, unless it is much wider.
  • A comfort fit band has a gently rounded inside that slides over the knuckle more easily.
  • Eternity bands should be sized carefully because they are very hard to resize later.

What About the Stones?

Moissanite suits a wedding band well because it is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale) and keeps its sparkle with daily wear. Small stones in a band are held by small prongs or channels, so have them checked once or twice a year. If your engagement ring has a lab grown diamond, moissanite accent stones will look very similar, with a little more rainbow fire in sunlight. Read can you wear moissanite every day?

What a Moissanite Band Costs

In our store, moissanite wedding bands start at about $100 in sterling silver, and most cost under $700 in any metal. The metal and the number of stones decide most of the price. See the moissanite ring price guide.

Wearing Your Rings

Traditionally the wedding band goes on first, closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on top. Many people now wear them in whichever order looks and feels best. Read which order to wear your rings, and see half eternity rings for their meaning.

Quick Answers

Should my wedding band match my engagement ring?

It does not have to, but matching the metal and karat keeps the colors identical and the rings wearing evenly.

Half eternity or full eternity?

Half eternity is more comfortable and usually resizable; full eternity sparkles all round but is very hard to resize.

What width wedding band is most popular?

For stone-set women's bands, about 2 to 3 mm.

Why does my band not sit flush with my engagement ring?

Halos, low settings and pointed stones can leave a gap. A curved or contour band solves it.
