Pear cut colorless loose moissanite, a popular shape for toi et moi rings

Toi et Moi Ring Meaning: History and How to Design One

A toi et moi ring sets two stones side by side on one band. The name is French for "you and me", and the meaning is just as simple: two people, two stones, one ring. It is one of the oldest romantic ring designs and one of the most popular modern ones. Here is where it comes from and how to design your own.

What does toi et moi mean?

Toi et moi means "you and me". Each stone stands for one person, and the way they sit together on the band stands for the relationship. Many couples choose two different stones or shapes to show two different personalities joined together.

A short history

Two-stone rings were popular in the late 18th century. The most famous one belonged to Joséphine de Beauharnais: Napoleon Bonaparte gave her a gold toi et moi ring around the time of their marriage in 1796, set with a pear-shaped sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond, each a little under a carat. It stayed in the Bonaparte family for more than two centuries and sold at auction in France in 2013 for about $949,000, nearly fifty times its estimate.

The style came back in the early 20th century and again in the last few years, when two-stone engagement rings started appearing on the hands of well-known brides and in jewelers' trend reports. Today it sits alongside east-west settings as one of the defining looks in our engagement ring trends guide.

How to design a toi et moi ring

Choose the two shapes

  • A matching pair: two pears, two ovals or two rounds for a balanced, symmetrical look.
  • Pear and oval: a favourite mix; the soft oval and the pointed pear complement each other.
  • Emerald and pear: a crisp step cut next to a brilliant teardrop, modern and architectural.
  • Round and pear, or marquise and oval: classic shapes with a little contrast.

Pear and marquise stones are often angled so their points sweep past each other, which gives the ring movement.

Choose the two stones

Both stones can be the same material or two different ones. Options we work with include:

  • Colorless moissanite for strong fire and a big look on a sensible budget. New to it? Read what is moissanite?
  • Colored moissanite, such as blue or green next to a colorless stone, for a personal touch. See our colored moissanite guide.
  • Lab grown diamond, a real diamond grown in a lab, for a white sparkle.

Balance the sizes

Equal sizes, often around 1 carat each, give a calm, balanced look. A larger and a smaller stone make the ring feel more playful and let one stone lead. Because two stones spread across the finger, a toi et moi ring covers more of the hand than a solitaire of the same total weight.

Pick the setting and metal

Prongs show the most of each stone; a bezel around one or both stones gives a sleeker, more protected edge. The band can be plain, pavé or a bypass design that wraps around each stone. Yellow gold gives a warm, vintage feel; white gold and platinum make the stones look crisp and bright.

Practical tips

  • Wedding band: two stones make the top of the ring wide and uneven, so a straight band may leave a gap. A contoured or curved band usually sits closer.
  • Everyday wear: points on pear and marquise stones should be protected with V-prongs or a bezel. Moissanite and lab grown diamond are both hard enough for daily wear.
  • Finger shape: on a slim finger, set the pair slightly diagonally so the ring does not overhang the sides.
